Historic Tour Description
.

Discover the essential sights of Salvador on a tour tracing the development of the city from its simple beginnings to what is now the third largest city in Brazil, with 2,675.000 inhabitants and the Greater Salvador area with 4 million inhabitants, according to the 2014 sense, becoming the largest city in the Northeast of Brazil.  After ship pick up we pass by the elegant tree-lined avenues of the city until reach the bustling streets of Pelourinho, a Unesco Heritage site and the largest complex of colonial architecture in the South America. We leave the vehicle at the Muncipal Square, by the towering Lacerda Elevator, with great views of the bay stretching out to the lower city, and stroll through the narrow, bustling streets lined with buildings in pastel shades of an age gone by, soaking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city. We visit the church of São Francisco with its exuberant gold-leafed Baroque interior and the Pelourinho square, the heart of the old town.
As of Brazil and Portuguese America´s first Capital from 1549 to 1763, Salvador da Bahia witnessed the blending of European, African and Amerindian cultures, in a time Brazil was still a Monarchy (untill 1822). It was also, from 1558, the first slave market in the New World, with slaves arriving to work on the sugar plantations. The city has managed to preserve many outstanding Renaissance buildings. A special feature of the old town are the brightly coloured houses, often decorated with fine stucco-work.
The Historic Centre of Salvador da Bahia has a high degree of authenticity in terms of location and setting, forms and designs, materials and substances. In the 1990s, some 1,350 properties were restored in the Pelourinho district with the objective of developing the economic potential of the area by exploiting tourism.
The Historic Tour is a Walking Tour!

Panoramic Tour Description
.

We continue to The Lower City tour, another perspective of the sprawling city, taking us to the quiet waters of the Itapagipe Peninsula where life moves at a slower pace than the bustling upper city. Fishermen fish from dug out canoes, locals collect shellfish at low tide, schooners lie at anchor, all protected by the famous Bonfim church, one of the most important churches of pilgrimage in Brazil and deeply syncretised with the Candomblé. (visit). We continue to the Monserrat district with its panoramic view of the city and on to the Mercado Modelo, a thriving market for local artifacts and souvenirs. This is also where you can test your bargaining talents!
