Historic Walking Tour Description

The Upper City
Salvador, also known as São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, was the first capital of Brazil from 1549 to 1763. It was founded by the Portuguese as a colonial city and a strategic port for trade with Africa and Asia. It was also the first slave market in the New World, where millions of Africans were brought to work on the sugar plantations. Salvador witnessed the blending of European, African, and Amerindian cultures, and became a center of Brazilian Catholicism with 372 churches. It has preserved many outstanding Renaissance buildings and a historic center that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Discover the essential sights of Salvador on a half-day tour tracing the development of the city from its simple beginnings to what is now the third largest city in Brazil. The tour focuses on historical and geographical aspects of the city and serves as a fine orientation for those wishing to further explore the city.
After Port Pick up DoBrazilRight takes you to the Barra district at the mouth of the immense bay, a site of important historical landmarks in Brasil’s early colonial period, now also a residential waterfront neighborhood. We then proceed via elegant tree-lined avenues and bustling city streets to the Pelourinho, a Unesco Heritage site and the largest complex of colonial architecture in South America. We leave the vehicle at the Municipal Square, by the towering Lacerda Elevator, allowing for great views of the bay stretching out to the lower city, and stroll through the narrow, bustling streets lined with buildings in pastel shades of an age gone by, soaking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city. We visit the church of São Francisco with its exuberant gold-leafed Baroque interior and the Pelourinho square, the heart of the old town.
The number of churches in the capital is closely related to the history of the municipality. Salvador was built as an extension of Portugal and it serves as evidence of the Catholic Church’s reach beyond the Iberian Peninsula. The construction of the majority of the capital’s churches was made possible by the colonial elite. Each family financed these constructions as a way to express their power.

Highlights:
  • Historic landmarks in Barra district
