Visiting the city of Petropolis is an amazing opportunity to experience the Brazilian history of the 19th century.
Serra da Estrela (mountain), where Petrópolis is located, was practically unknown to the Portuguese settlers in the first 200 years of colonization. This was due to the enormous mountainous wall of more than 1000m of height that had to be overcome to get there; and also by the presence of the brave Indians Coroados that inhabited saw up.
The foundation of the city of Petrópolis is closely linked to the Emperor D. Pedro I (1798-1834). Ever since the Emperor had spent the night in the Correia Priest’s farm, on the way to the Gold Path that would take him to Minas Gerais, he was enchanted by the exuberance and warmth of the climate. It was his desire, then, to acquire the property for his use, and especially for the treatment of his daughter, Princess Dona Paula Mariana, who was always very ill and who recovered well when she was there. Dom Pedro felt the need to build a palace outside Rio de Janeiro, as he received many visits from Europe unused to the tropical heat, a summer retreat.
The city of Petropolis is located 65 km away from the Marvelous City and has been called the Imperial City since the times of the Emperor Pedro II (1825-1891). Founded in 1845 and Settled by Germans, Petropolis keeps the memory of Brazilian history alive with its buildings and charming streets. It was the first entirely planned City in Brazil and in the Modern World.
Upon arrival in Petropolis, tour starts with the visit to the Quitandinha Palace, built in 1941 to be the biggest Hotel Casino in South America. Part of the property nowadays is a Cultural Center and the property is considered the Biggest Brazilian Palace. Visit will last approx. 40min
After Quitandinha Palace, Tour will Continue to Lago Sul Churrascaria, All you can eat Brazilian Style Barbecue, rated as the best in Petropolis, located just a few steps from the Quitandinha Palace (3-min walk). Lunch will last approx. 1 hour and 20 minutes.
After Lunch, passengers will visit the Crystal Palace, inaugurated in 1884.The pre-assembled structure was commissioned by the Count d’Eu, being built in the workshops of the Saint-Souver Lés Arras Corporation in France. The structure is inspired by the Crystal Palace in London, and the Crystal Palace of Oporto. The Count’s intention was to present Princess Elizabeth in order to be able to grow her vegetables. The Crystal Palace is used for exhibitions and events, such as the Bauernfest, annual feast in honor of the German settlers of Petropolis. Visit will last approx. 20 minutes.
Tour will continue to Behemia Brewery, stablished in 1853 by German Settler Henrique Kremer. At the time of its foundation, Bohemia preserved the characteristics of the German beers of the time, with an initial production of six thousand bottles per month. The product was distributed through carriages, cars pulled by animals, etc. The visit offers the most complete brewing experience in Latin America. The Tour features the history of beer, its production process and ingredients that bring visitors to unique sensory experiences and unique tastings.Visit will last approx. 2 hours.
After Bohemia Brewery, Tour will continue to the Imperial Museum, which has been the summer residence of the Emperor D. Pedro II, and keeps furniture and objects such as the crown of gold, pearls and diamonds used by D. Pedro I and D. Pedro II. Visit will last 1 hour and a half. Museum is not open on Mondays!
The tour will continue on to the Gothic Cathedral where Princess Isabel was buried along with the tombstones of D. Pedro II and his wife.
