Historical Heritage of Recife and Olinda Tour

Recife

Your exploration of Recife begins aboard an air-conditioned Van or Micro Bus. The tour will start with a Panoramic Ride through Boa Viagem Beach, with a quick stop for pictures and refreshments.

The tour will continue to Ground Zero Square, which marks the place where the city was born, on the edge of Port Quay. Located in the neighborhood of Old Recife, the place is marked by a panel of the artist Cícero Dias, installed on the floor. There will be a Walking Tour (a short walk of approx. 350m) until where the Malakoff Tower (observatory from the 1800s) is located, passing by Bom Jesus Street and Arsenal Square, with many Historic Buildings.

On the way Group will visit the Giant Puppets Embassy (a local Cultural Carnival Institution), the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue (the first synagogue of the Americas), and the Pernambuco Embassy, to immerse in the local folklore and popular culture.

The Tour will continue to Casa da Cultura (Culture House).  Casa da Cultura is one of the largest centers for selling handicrafts in the city of Recife. It works in the building of the former Recife Jailhouse, which was the largest prison in Brazil in the 19th century and the first panoramic radial prison in South America.
The Casa da Cultura houses two panels by the Pernambuco painter Cícero Dias, which represent the Pernambuco Revolutions of 1817 and 1824. In addition to the Clênio Wanderley Theater, the Nelson Ferreira Stage, and more than 110 art and craft stores. Associations and Unions such as the Unified Black Movement, Political Amnesties, and the Artisans Union of the Metropolitan Region of Recife and Pernambuco.

Olinda

A 25-minute drive from Casa da Cultura will take you to the 16th-century colonial town of Olinda.   Olinda’s main square, the Alto da Sé lies on the crest of the town’s highest hill. A remarkably well-preserved colonial city, founded in 1535, UNESCO has declared Olinda a world-historical monument.

There will be 2 stops in Olinda, the Saint Benedict Monastery, to see the baroque main altar that was taken for an exhibition at NYC’s Guggenheim Museum in the year 2000, and The Sé Cathedral (take a moment to admire the colorful Portuguese tiles and woodcarvings adorned with gold leaf that punctuate the architecture) From the top of Olinda, you also have breathtaking views of downtown and the Boa Viagem district.

Passengers will have approx. 2 hours in Olinda, where will be able to take a little break for lunch/snacks.
